Are you sick of your lawn's relentless demands? Want a landscape that's interesting during all seasons? Do you dream of outdoor privacy? Are you a Nature lover with no Nature in sight? For these and other landscaping dilemmas, turn to Shrink Your Lawn: Design ideas for any landscape, an illustrated collection of landscape design ideas from Evelyn J. Hadden, founder and editor of the LessLawn website.

Books such as Virginia Scott Jenkins' The Lawn: A History of an American Obsession and the recent American Green: The Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Lawn by Ted Steinberg have addressed some of the personal and environmental costs of our lawns. Now Evelyn J. Hadden describes strategies for replacing any size lawn with more useful or less costly alternatives.

As water shortages become more prevalent and energy prices fluctuate, people are replacing their thirsty, energy-intensive lawns with low-maintenance, native, fragrant, and even edible landscapes. If you are

thinking of shrinking your lawn, this book answers the question: "What could I put there instead?"

Inside Shrink Your Lawn, you'll see inspiring examples of Rain Gardens, Boulevard Gardens, Island Beds, Stroll Gardens, Herb Gardens, and many other ideas to replace any stretch of lawn. Find out where to start eliminating lawn. Explore a variety of functional landscape elements. Learn ways to create new garden rooms. Discover alternatives to turfgrass. Imagine lawnless landscapes.

Say goodbye to lawn and hello to your own personal paradise... shrink your lawn today!

Evelyn J. Hadden has been writing and publishing information about naturalistic landscaping since 2001, when she founded the informational website LessLawn.com.

For several years, she has spoken to groups across the country about "Design Ideas to Shrink Your Lawn," and this color slideshow and talk formed the basis for the book Shrink Your Lawn. Her previous book Apprentice to a Garden explores the joys, challenges, and life lessons experienced while converting a small urban lawn into a naturalistic landscape.

Shown at left : Evelyn Hadden enjoys do-it-yourself projects such as replacing half of her back lawn with this rock patio.

When she isn't in the garden or writing about landscaping, Hadden makes music. She sings lead and plays the piano in the Ev Hadden Trio, a rhythm and blues band which includes her husband George on bass and guitarist Jon Hoffman.

7 Places to Start Shrinking Your Lawn
(tips from author Evelyn J. Hadden)
  • The Boulevard
A boulevard lawn has no chance to thrive, exposed to baking sun or competing trees, pedestrian traffic, road salt, and runoff. Reclaim your boulevard by turning it into a hardy Boulevard Garden. (pg 21)

  • The Alley
Outside the back fence, a strip of lawn is easy to neglect. Why not transform it into a "Welcome Home" Garden for commuters? (pg 18)

  • A Slope
Sloping lawns send the wrong message. Reduce runoff and erosion and discourage unwanted traffic with a Slope Garden. (pg 28)

  • Against a Building
An area cut off from the main lawn isn't useful for lawn activities, but it could make a dramatic and easy-care garden. (pg 27)

  • The Front Door
So much of a visitor's first impression happens before you answer the door. Set the tone of every visit with a Welcome Garden. (pg 14)

  • The Kitchen Door
The cook will thank you for planting herbs and spices within easy reach. It's less expensive and more nutritious too! (pg 34)

  • A Poorly Drained Area
Resolve your drainage problems with a well-sited Rain Garden or Swale Garden. (pg 38)
